Debat 21-N | Desnonaments. Un fenomen global?

Evictions violate several internationally recognized fundamental rights, among them housing rights. Therefore, the ESCR Observatory is organizing a debate to reflect on the global dimensions of these practices after more than a decade of fighting against them.

Evictions are a reality that took place on the media and social agenda at the root of the economic crisis of 2008. As a result, several civil society groups started questioning this reality and deepening their causes, such as the commercialization of housing and bank fraud. Now, more than ten years and more than a million evictions later, the ESCR Observatory is organizing a day in Barcelona to make a balance and see the challenges we face when it comes to defending the right to housing. We will be joined by activists from all over the world: Jana Mezher, member of Public Works Studio and activist for the right to housing in Beirut; and Rob Robinson, housing rights activist in New York.

On the other hand, we will address the sense in which evictions are increasingly crossed by global logics. To do this, we will focus on the vulture funds (which are the main ones responsible) and analyze how these funds also affect other areas, such as the arms trade and health, accompanied by Jordi González Guzmán, doctoral researcher at the University of Leeds (UK) and activist at the Tenants' Union and David Palomera Zaidel, economist and researcher at the Institute of Government and Public Policies (IGOP-UAB) and espaizerovuit.
